Special Black Portrait Exhibit

As part of the celebration of Black History Month in February, the city of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy presents a series of portraits painted by artist Sylvia Castellanos, The Road to Martin Luther King – A Portrait Collection, through March 2, on the second Floor, across from office of the mayor. Subjects include Booker T. Washington, Father Augustus Tolton, Frederick Douglass, General Benjamin Davis, Jr., of the Tuskegee Airmen, George Washington Carver, Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Joe Lewis, Josephine Baker, Madam C.J. Walker, Marian Anderson, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington.
Curator Phyllis Sims says, “This collection is a living drama of real-life African-Americans who worked to abolish slavery and segregation while helping to pave the way for the civil rights victories of the mid-20th century. “
